Since 1976, the Atlanta Film Festival has offered audiences the opportunity to experience the best in international and independent cinema, from works by emerging regional media makers to masterpieces from the world's celebrated artists. The Atlanta Film Festival is one of the most respected and longest-running festivals in the United States. The Atlanta Film Festival strives to introduce new talent to audiences and has been among the first places to show work by then new filmmakers such as Spike Lee, Victor Nunez and Joel Coen.
The winner of Short categories becomes Oscar-Qualified for the Academy Award® for Best Animated Short Film, Documentary Short Subject and Best Live-Action Short Film.
Awards
The winner of the short film competition automatically qualifies for the OSCAR competition for the Best Short Film.

The Documentary Feature category is for non-fiction films that run 40 minutes or longer. Animated and Experimental films that meet these guidelines also qualify.
The Music Video category is for original music videos (a visual accompaniment and/or representation of a piece of music generally 1–10 minutes in length) and music films (no longer than 20 minutes) that may be narrative, experimental, or animated. Songs must be the ORIGINAL composition of the band or musician featured in the video. Covers will not be considered.
The Documentary Short category is for non-fiction films shorter than 39 minutes and 59 seconds.
Virtual Reality films, of any genre and type, under 45 minutes long.
Submissions may include pilots or full-length episodes between 1 and 60 minutes long. Formats include television, mini-series and/or webisodes. Be sure to note any additional or upcoming episodes (with approximate run-times).
The Animated Short category is for films shorter than 39 minutes and 59 seconds that feature primarily animated content or stop-motion animation. Films that feature live-action puppetry belong in the puppetry category.
The Experimental Short category is for experimental films shorter than 39 minutes and 59 seconds.
The Narrative Short category is for fictional films shorter than 39 minutes and 59 seconds.
