Studied at the Journalist Faculty of the Kazakh University, the Directing Faculty of the VGIK (Soloviev’s Master Workshop). In 1990, graduated from the Directing Faculty of the Alma-Ata Theater and Art Institute. His feature début Razluchnitsa was given the Fipresci Prize at the Moscow Film Festival.

The film uses an interesting artistic touch – performance of Johann Sebastian Bach’s work by traditional musical instruments: dombra and kobyz. The way the music is performed emphasizes the subtleness and original character of the film.
