Andrey, a young investigator, is assigned to the case of an astronomer’s mysterious death. He soon discovers that the astronomer had a phenomenally talented daughter, Marina, that he kept hidden from the world. While Andrey investigates further, Marina runs away to Moscow. There she meets Zoya, a kindly woman whose life has recently taken a turn for the worse. The two soon become friends, but after a while Zoya begins to suspect that Marina might not be who she claims to be, and that her sudden appearance in her life was no accident.
