Sydney is one of the most important film events of its kind on an international level; with a high reputation for the best of world cinema and strong local following. The festival invites around 20 international guests, among them directors, business representatives (distributors, producers, festival directors) who attend seminars and panel discussions. Most Australian distributors are based in Sydney, as are pub casters ABC and SBS, the commercial TV networks and much of the print media including Murdoch's the Australian newspaper.

The Live Action Short Award and Animation Award are Academy Award® eligible.


  • Cash prize A$ 60,000 (in competition);
  • Jury Prize.



  • All international productions and local productions must be a premiere in the Australian state of New South Wales;
  • Works that are solely promotional, educational or scientific in nature are not eligible for selection for the SFF;
  • Films must have been completed since 28 March 2021.
  • Entries under 40 mins

Premiere Requirements
