About

As the former location of the DEFA Animated Film Studio, Dresden has a long tradition as a center for animated film, reflected in the orientation of its film festival. Dresden is the only new East-German festival actually founded before the tumbling down of the Wall. Filmfest Dresden is Europe's short film festival with the best funded awards.

It is one of the most important short film events of the year and the leader in the specialized area of animation. Growing numbers of visitors from all branches of the industry and a high degree of audience popularity evidence Dresden's significance for the national short film scene.

Awards

International Competition:

• Animation (Euro 7,500),
• Fiction (Euro 7,500),
• Youth Jury Award (Euro 2,000),
• Audience Award (Euro 3,000).

National Competition:

• Animation (Euro 3,000),
• Fiction (Euro 3,000),
• Audience Award (Euro 2,000),
• Youth Jury Award (Euro 2,000),
• Promotion Award (Euro 20,000).

International and National Competition Awards:

• ARTE Short Film Prize € 6,000 towards purchase of a film, 
• Golden Horseman for Film Sound € 3,000.

Rules

The following film productions are eligible for submission to the competitions:

• length 30 minutes maximum
• produced after 31st December 2021
• genre: short feature or animated film

Submissions via film upload only at Shortfilmdepot.

The applicant is responsible for the costs of dispatching the screening copy to the festival. The festival covers the costs of returning the film to the applicants.

Please note: We only accept 35mm or DCP copies for festival screenings!
