In 1982 an American schoolgirl Samantha Smith notes on the cover of the Times magazine the new Soviet leader Yuri Andropov as a man of the year. She decides to write a letter to him. A year later, a letter from Andropov comes to her with an invitation to visit the Soviet Union and make sure that the Russians are friendly towards the Americans. Together with his family, Samantha is awaited by adventures in Moscow, Leningrad and the Artek pioneer camp, where she discovers a new world for herself. She manages to make friends with Soviet children, but the story ends tragically...
