I made Lumens in order to explore the contradictory and difficult feelings I was having about Russia after five years away. I desperately missed my homeland, but every time I returned there, I felt profound isolation; living in the US had changed me, exposing me to feminist ideas that I didn’t encounter growing up. Since becoming aware of my rights as a woman and my own internalized misogyny and self-hate, visiting home had become frustrating and alienating.
