For artist Tatyana Necheukhina, every new subject on the canvas is a dialogue with the world, offering her a way to explore the depths of everyday life. She is currently working on a piece titled The Holy Family, using it as an opportunity to reflect on the concept of motherhood. Necheukhina compares her own perceptions with the feelings and memories of her siblings. While their stories differ, they are also strikingly similar. Together, they form an archetypal portrait of a woman whose life, marked by a wartime childhood, widowhood and the struggle to raise her children, reflects the destiny of an entire generation. The film explores profound life traumas: the fear of losing one’s parents, which masks the realisation of one’s own mortality, as well as the fear of ageing and dementia, where the self fades away before life itself ends. However, rather than evoking oppressive dread, Four Mirrors offers the viewer a path to healing through acceptance. Four Mirrors is a film of forgiveness, a lullaby for a mother who, over time, has grown small and frail. At the same time, it serves as a mirror in which the viewer sees themselves.
