The true story of legendary Moscow football player Fyodor Cherenkov’s origins, loves, friendships, and personal and professional upheavals. Fedya, as he was affectionately known to his fans, quickly bursts onto Spartak’s main lineup, where he strikes up a firm friendship with stars of Soviet football: Rodionov, Gavrilov, Dasayev. In short time he becomes a key player for the team and one of the best players in the nation. However, a series of upsets – the loss of his father, a deadly crowd crush at a match at Luzhniki Stadium, and an ill-fated bout against the Belgian club Anderlecht – lead to a serious psychological breakdown. The sole thing that holds him back from total despair is his dream of competing at the World Cup. Yet the Soviet national team’s head coach drops him from the lineup at the last moment. Fedya seriously considers ending his career, but for the sake of his family, friends, and fans, he makes a comeback in order to lead his club to the championship and again prove himself the best.
