O festival Caminhos do Cinema Português nasceu em 1988. As suas três primeiras edições foram uma mostra temática de cinema português. Em 1997 apresentou a sua quarta edição com moldes competitivos, tendo desde então sido o único festival de Cinema Português.
O festival Caminhos afirmou-se como uma referência do panorama português na promoção da diversidade de produção nacional desde os projectos finais de escola de cinema, passando pela animação, documentário, curta-metragem até à longa-metragem.
O nosso historial leva-nos a crer que podemos traçar novos Caminhos para o Cinema Português, ao incluir também o reconhecimento artístico-técnico dos membros de cada produção, bem como pela promoção da região centro como o palco do Cinema Português.
Ao nível conceptual, o festival caracteriza-se por uma amplitude de registos que são o fidedigno registo do panorama da produção cinematográfica nacional anual. A inovação do projecto está no facto de se proceder ao acolhimento num único espaço, e de submeter a produção cinematográfica nacional à análise de um júri.
Ao longo das últimas cinco edições, o festival tem registado uma atractividade e exigência crescente que se reflecte tanto num elevado número de acreditações profissionais, face à dimensão e contexto do seu programa, como num número crescente de públicos que foi quebrado pela pandemia Covid-19. Essa quebra não significou um afastamento, mas uma aproximação exponencial (+ 114%) do público nas actividades complementares à exibição. Na exibição cinematográfica não quisemos ir ao encontro da dimensão digital do streaming porque o cinema, sobretudo num festival, tem que ser uma experiência colectiva em que se dá a ver para a seguir se dar a debater a estética da recepção de cada espectador. A nosso ver, essa experiência remediada do cinema só poderá ser feita em complemento à sala.
Nos últimos anos, os Caminhos marcam-se progressivamente por um leque cada vez mais diverso de filmes, origens, géneros e descobertas de novos autores que pouco a pouco se tornam presenças assíduas na comunidade cinematográfica. É assim que olhamos para o mundo e para os espaços da lusofonia como representações naturais presentes nestes nossos Caminhos do Cinema. Chegamos em 2021 à XXVII edição, com esperança de que o presente momento que vivemos seja marcado pela pluralidade cultural na região de Coimbra e a descentralização da oferta cultural, permitindo continuar que seja esta a cidade marcada no mapa como o local onde há “cinema português para todos”.

The festival Caminhos do Cinema Português was established in 1988. Its first three editions were a thematic exhibition of Portuguese Cinema. In 1997, it presented its fourth edition in a competitive format and, since then, it has been the only Portuguese festival of Portuguese Cinema.
The Caminhos festival has established itself as a reference on the Portuguese scene in promoting the diversity of national production, from final film school projects, through animation, documentaries, short films to feature films.
Our history leads us to believe that we can trace new paths for Portuguese Cinema, by also including the artistic-technical recognition of the members of each production, as well as by promoting the Centre region as the stage for Portuguese Cinema.
On a conceptual level, the festival is characterised by a wide range of records that are a faithful record of the panorama of annual national film production. The innovation of the project lies in the fact that it is hosted in a single space and submits the national film production to the analysis of a jury.
Throughout the last five editions, the festival has registered a growing attractiveness and demand, which is reflected both in a high number of professional accreditations, given the dimension and context of its programme, and in a growing number of audiences which was broken by the Covid-19 pandemic. This break did not mean a distancing, but an exponential approach (+ 114%) of the public in complementary activities to the exhibition. In film exhibition, we did not want to meet the digital dimension of streaming because cinema, especially in a festival, has to be a collective experience in which one can see and then debate the aesthetics of the reception of each spectator. In our opinion, this remedial experience of cinema can only be done in addition to the screening room.
In recent years, the Caminhos have been progressively marked by an increasingly diverse range of films, origins, genres and discoveries of new authors who are gradually becoming regular presences in the cinematographic community. This is how we look at the world and the spaces of Lusophony as natural representations present in our programme. We arrive in 2021 to the XXVII edition, with the hope that the present moment we live in will be marked by the cultural plurality in the area of Coimbra and the decentralization of the cultural offer, allowing to continue that this is the city marked on the map as the place where there is "Portuguese cinema for all".
