About

ASTRA FILM FESTIVAL is a major event in the European film community. The Festival is located in Sibiu – Romania, and it is unique in this part of Europe. Besides the four AFF Competition Sections , it offers a variety of programs showing the diversity and the current tendencies of documentary film. AFF SIBIU is the place to see great documentaries, to feel the pulse of Romanian and Eastern European documentary film production, meet fellow-filmmakers from around the world, debate upon major issues faced by documentarists while exposing real life and real people on the big screen, and interact with professionals and with an enthusiastic audience.
Masterclasses, panels, concerts, and other parallel events complete the AFF SIBIU program.

Program

The Official Selection:

• INTERNATIONAL (competitive) -  world documentaries;
• CENTRAL&EASTERN EUROPE (competitive)  - documentaries produced by and/or on Central & Eastern European contemporary issues;
• ROMANIA (competitive) - Romanian productions / co-productions;
• STUDENT (competitive)  - film school production made as part of film school course work;
• PANORAMA (non-competitive) - International showcase;
• MADE IN ROMANIA (non-competitive) -  documentaries on issues in Romania, not restricted to Romanian productions;
• THEME PROGRAMMES,
• SPECIAL SCREENINGS.

AFF Extended Programmes:

• ASTRA FILM NATIONAL TOUR (a selection of films in AFF Programs presented in major cities in Romania);
• ASTRA FILM CINEMATHEQUE.

Awards

• Best International Doc Award (international documentaries, feature length);
• Best Central&Eastern European Doc (documentaries produced by and/or on Central &
• Eastern European contemporary issues, feature length);
• Best Romanian Doc (Romanian productions / co-productions);
• Best DocSchool Film (European film school productions);

The prizes in total amount of Euro 25,000 will be awarded to the authors of the winning films.

Rules

The films submitted for the competitive sections must be copyrighted in 2023 or 2024. This year limit does not apply to films submitted for non-competitive sections.
