10-year-old Bakyt lives with his father. They go to the baths together and eat together. Their relationship is not verbose, the father tries to bring up independence in the child. Thus, the father does not come home at night. Bakyt, hiding his anxieties, continues his daily routine. He goes to school, cooks for himself, but every night without his father it becomes harder and harder for him to endure.
I remember when the idea for the movie “Son of the Sun” came up. The crew and I were having lunch, and the boring conversation at the table sent my thoughts to imagining a story about the relationship between father and son. I grew up without a father myself, so this theme is very close to me. I wanted to show my son's love for his father, but without the vivid displays of emotion. I wanted to show a man's love without sentimentality. And while we were eating, I had the plot of the future film in my head. Only a year later it became possible to shoot it. For the main role we searched for a boy in the city schools and boarding schools. All in all we looked at about 300 boys and I chose the fifth one. We also spent a long time looking for a location for the characters. The apartment, or rather the room we ended up renting, I saw by chance. On the balcony of this apartment was a sign: "Urgent! Urgent! Urgent! For Sale!". I went up the stairs and posing as a buyer looked at the location. The picture I saw left a strong impression on me. I saw the truth of life. A truth that our filmmakers don't film. I was scared. Could I show this truth? That fear is what drove me to make this film.
