The soldier went fishing and met the Mermaid. She wanted to make him her lover. And he said no.. The Mermaid was offended and stole the official boots from the Soldier. But the Soldier showed ingenuity and fooled her.
Directors Statement
The fairy tale "The Soldier and the Mermaid" is a gorgeous example of the great and mighty Russian language, with amazing dialogues and humor. There are unusual characters and a fabulous atmosphere with miracles that is always very cinematic. It was important and interesting for me to get away from stereotypes. I didn’t want to show the Mermaid as a young, insidious beauty, and the Soldier as brave and dull man. The mermaid is the oldest deity on the planet. Who said she couldn't be an experienced middle-aged single woman? Then the tale becomes multi-layered. This is no longer a fairy tale about who is trickier, but a metaphor about missed opportunities, total misunderstanding, and fear of relationships, selfishness and loneliness.
