Directors Statement
Like any parent, I want to be a good father to my kid. I want to be a role model; I want to be an authority and be loved. And certainly, want him to have the best future possible. But what if my ‘best future’ doesn’t match my kid’s vision? What’s more important, to keep a good relation or use authority to force him or her to follow my ideals? And what if at the same time the world around us is falling into the abyss. And everyone feels like a hostage to circumstances. When you're completely helpless and there is no confidence in anything. It was important for us to show this feeling of confusion and helplessness, when you have to make decisions almost blindly. It was important neither manipulate the viewer's empathy, nor push the viewer to take sides, nor divide the characters into good and bad ones. It was important to show complicated feelings and decisions of our characters. The wonderful ‘Past Lives’ and ‘Aftersun’ became the main reference points for us in the choice of tone, aesthetics and pace of narration. And, of course, Kim Ki-duk's masterpiece ’Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring’ that inspired us. We took its famous title, but shifted the emphasis from Spring to Winter.
