"Chick's Childhood" is an adulthood drama based on the short stories written by Fazil Iskander. The action takes place in Abkhazia at the edge of Stalin's epoch, late 40s - early 50s of the XXth century. Chick is a thirteen years old naughty and meditative boy. His life is common, the life of simple Soviet schoolboy in the sunny city Mukhus at the sea coast. After his father's sudden detention he acutely feels his growing up, but still can't change his cheerful personality and big heart. His deep sense of justice is the origin of all his both dangerous and humorous adventures.

Directors Statement

The adaptation of literature classics and especially books about childhood requires a certain director's responsibility. Moreover if the film is dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the book's author - Fazil Iskander, who is one of the greatest writers of the second half of the XXth century in the world. His book of short stories "Chick's Childhood" is considered one of the best examples of the books about childhood. "The childhood actually formes any human, and many impressions from that time build a character of a grown up person. Thus it can be named the ground of the grown up person in future. Besides in the stories about Chick I was intended highly to inspire the reader with the childhood's poetry. Surely there can be tragic episodes but I tried to avoid them. "Chick" is a song of childhood. I wanted all my readers - both young and grown up - to be inspired and filled with life powers". These words of Fazil Iskander about his book "Chick's Childhood" for me became the guideline, the compass while working on the film. "To inspire the reader (viewer) with the childhood's poetry" - this is the main goal of our film. To cheer up the viewers with the humour, carry them away with the intrigue of children's tricks, to freshen them with the purity of child's view and remind about the vital things - these were the most important tasks of the film.
