Since its inception, the festival has served as an influential platform for Arab filmmakers and talent at an international level, by spearheading the cinema movement in the region. Independent and established talents from Asian and African countries with a burgeoning cinema culture are also given prominent standing in the festival’s programme and competition.
Through its events, workshops, seminars and principal mandate of presenting the finest selection of cinema from all over the world it has become the leading film festival in the Middle East, Asia and Africa. DIFF is a frontrunner in promoting better cultural understanding through creative achievements in film.

Films must have been produced after September 1, 2014.
DIFF’s heavily contested competition for feature fiction and non-fiction; and short films originating from the United Arab Emirates and the Arab world will compete for the prestigious Muhr Awards (Arab Nationality or Origin shall mean people from one or more of the following countries: Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen).
Films must not have been broadcasted and/or made available on television, the internet, mobile phones and/or any other public viewing platform now known or thereafter devised before and until the end of the festival, and must not have been screened in the Gulf region for any audiences before DIFF. With exceptions for films that have participated in the Gulf Film Festival.
Films that have been submitted to earlier editions of DIFF will not be considered unless substantive changes can be shown since initial submission.
Feature films must be works of fiction that equal or exceed 60 minutes in length.
Short films must be works of fiction that don't exceed 59 minutes in length.
Each of the competitive sections requires films to be directed by filmmakers of certain nationality or origin as defined in the appendices attached to the Regulations.
Documents and Other Requisite Items
The submitter covers all shipping costs of the submitted material. It is recommended to use a courier for shipping submissions.
The submitted material will not be returned and might be kept for internal use of the festival.
The final selection will be announced by the end of November 2014.
Once a film is selected, the submitter will not be able to withdraw nor change the Premiere status of the film at any given time before it is screened at DIFF.
Shipping costs of the screening print to and from the festival premises will be incurred by DIFF.
Prints of all selected films will be insured throughout the period in which they are in the festival’s custody and until they are shipped back to the submitter. In the case of loss or damage during this period, only value of the print will be replaced.
